The Liebherr RL44 Winch Tractor (or: “Sidewinch”) is a modified variant of the Liebherr RL44 Litronic pipelayer, engineered for use with a lateral winch system in combination with the existing counterweight arrangement. Powered by the robust Liebherr D936 L A6 diesel engine — compliant with EU Stage IIIA and US EPA Tier 3 emission standards — it delivers dependable power, efficiency, and performance for heavy-duty pipeline operations.
The standard configuration includes a hydrostatic cooling fan drive, low ground pressure undercarriage, hydraulic winch system with free-fall function, and an enclosed operator’s cab featuring integrated ROPS protection. Track shoes are available in 711 mm or 914 mm widths, ensuring optimal traction across a variety of ground conditions. Optional equipment includes a low-temperature operation kit for reliable performance in extreme cold environments.
The winch tractor configuration can be applied to several Liebherr RL models — including the RL44, RL54, RL56, RL64, and RL66 — depending on the required pulling or winching capacity. This makes it a flexible and powerful solution for a wide range of pipeline support and recovery operations.
